Restore healthy sleep habits

Do you struggle to get to sleep at night, or feel like you wake up frequently in the night and can’t get back to sleep? Or maybe you just feel groggy and unrefreshed when you wake up? Sleep is fundamental to the optimal functioning of our health and wellbeing and so sleeping problems, such as insomnia, or sleep walking, can prevent some people from getting the quality sleep they need to be performing well in their lives. If we don’t get enough sleep, or the quality of our sleep is poor, then it may have a detrimental effect on a number of factors, including our energy levels, ability to concentrate, memory retention, immune function, diet, emotional wellbeing and how we deal with stress in our lives. 

Insomnia can be defined as the perception of poor quality sleep due to factors such as, difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking during the night and difficulty falling back to sleep, waking up early and not being able to return to sleep, or waking feeling unrefreshed. Many of us will have experienced periods of disrupted sleep at some point in our lives. Sometimes it is a temporary blip and we return to our usual sleep habits, but for others it can be more prolonged, resulting in feeling regularly tired and irritable and then worrying about getting to sleep each night. This can become an unhelpful cycle of worry, which does little to prepare for a good night’s sleep.  

Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for sleeping problems, for many people. In our sessions we will examine your sleep routine to understand any patterns that may be contributing to poor sleep and look at other potential factors in your life, such as stress or anxiety, that may also play a role. You will learn how to support better sleep ‘hygiene’ i.e. guidelines that aim to improve your ability to get to and stay asleep for healthy periods of time. You will learn relaxation skills to help reduce tension and promote greater physical and mental relaxation. We will examine and identify any thoughts and behaviours that may be contributing to poor sleep habits and replace these with positive, helpful thoughts, along with using visualisation and powerful mental imagery to promote better quality sleep. I will also teach you self-hypnosis so that you can apply these skills at home for maximum benefit.
